Late-ripening, high-yielding hybrid for popcorn (vegetation period 170 days).
The grain has a high content of minerals and vitamins A, E, B1, B2.
Seeds are sown in May in furrows 3-5 cm deep, placing 2-3 seeds every 30-40 cm, the distance between rows is 60-70 cm. After emergence, thinning is carried out.
In Estonia, it is better to grow through seedlings: sowing seeds in pots at the end of April and planting in open ground in late May - early June, when the threat of frost has passed.
Sowing in open ground, when the threat of recurrent frosts has passed, the soil warms up to + 10 °C.
Seed planting depth: 6-8 cm.
Care: weeding, loosening, hilling (watering as needed).
Sowing: May.
Harvesting: late August - September.
Planting pattern: 50x30 cm.
1.0 g = 10-12 seeds.
* Only a special "popping" variety of corn is used to make popcorn (it is very difficult or even impossible to make popcorn from regular corn used for starch or feed).
Popping corn has a very thin, but much harder and slightly glassy shell than regular corn.
Unlike other subspecies, popping corn kernels contain significantly more fat and protein (20%), approaching rye and even wheat in terms of the latter content.
An important economic property of popping corn is the ability of the kernels to increase in volume when popped. The quality of the grain for popping improves when it dries on the root, since in this case more uniform drying of the grain in all its layers is ensured. When the grain is harvested raw and dried in dryers, its popping properties are somewhat worse, since it is less evenly balanced in moisture. In this regard, harvesting of popcorn should begin when the grain moisture content is within 15-20%.
It is better to store popcorn grain, brought to the required moisture content, on the cob, since this significantly better preserves the technological qualities of the grain (for 3-4 years).
Before storing, it is necessary to remove all cobs affected by diseases and damaged by pests, for their better preservation.
It is recommended to husk the cobs shortly before the direct use of the grains for processing.
